The Venous Access RN is a registered professional nurse validated as a Vascular Access Specialist, who is responsible for providing and supervising direct and indirect total vascular access care to all age groups as identified in the direct care responsibilities. Utilizes the nursing process (assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating), in achieving the goals of the Venous Access Services department. Communicates with Department Supervisor, Clinical Specialist or Educator as needed to enhance excellence in the delivery of patient care. Adheres to the Florida Hospital Corporate Compliance Plan and all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state and federal agencies and accrediting bodies.

· Graduate from a School of Nursing

· Current registration with Florida State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Performs properly, legibly documents and reports all procedures and assessments in accordance with department policy. Performs venous access related procedures within the scope of practice of the RN licensure. Functions appropriately in Code Blue and other clinical emergencies. Evaluates effectiveness of interventions. Interprets and verifies physician orders, investigates questionable situations. Demonstrates continuous competency in the specific procedures related to venous access and infusion therapy. Provides expert resourcing to staff nurses and other departments as consulted.
· Obtains patient assessment, evaluating diagnosis, previous medical history, existing infusion related complications, and ordered therapy as relates to current venous access consult. Demonstrates the ability to assess and interpret data relative to patients’ age and infusion therapy and venous access needs.
· Identifies individualized plan of care based on patients’ needs related to both infusion therapy and the venous access consult and intervenes appropriately. Evaluates patients’ developmental level, identifies increased physical/emotional dependency needs and evaluates availability of support system consistent with assessment.
· Evaluates the need for and provides patient teaching in all aspects of the venous access specialty.
· Participates in practice changes as a result of performance improvement activities. Demonstrates accurate documentation and monitoring of activities as needed. Reflects a working knowledge of FloridaHospital’s Policies and Procedures in daily activities. Supports quality standards and initiatives set by the department. Communicates with Department Supervisor, Clinical Specialist, or Educator as needed to enhance excellence in the delivery of patient care.
· Follows CDC guidelines for sterile technique and isolation, demonstrates appropriate use of PPE, performs handwashing according to policy and enforces safety regulations.
· Manages and intervenes appropriately for the patient with current venous access issues, including but not limited to: prioritization, appropriate venous access choice for age, therapy, and any current complication’s impact on the needs for IV therapy.
Serving as a Charge RN:
· Under general supervision the Venous Access Charge RN is a registered professional nurse with leadership skills certified as a Vascular Access Specialist who is responsible for supervising and providing direct and indirect vascular access care to assigned age groups as identified in the position responsibilities. Adheres to the Florida Hospital Corporate Compliance Plan and to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state and federal agencies and accrediting bodies. Utilizing the hospital performance improvement process (assess, plan, implement, evaluate) in the goals of the Venous Access Services Department. · Demonstrates leadership skills and continuous competency in the specific procedures related to venous access and infusion therapy. Directs and provides supervision of patient venous access care activities of staff on shift basis ensuring staff is delegated tasks appropriate to their scope of practice, skill and the patients’ needs. Provides and supervises others in providing expert resourcing to staff nurses and other departments as consulted. Encourages staff participation in cost containment activities. Appropriate use and charging of patient charges and medical/surgical supplies
· Supports Supervisor, Clinical Specialist, Educator, other Charge Nurses and Staff in promoting a harmonious practice setting that fosters collegial relations, professional development, creativity and a safe environment. Is readily available to personnel on assigned shift for expressions of concern. · Prioritizes work load and triages assignments to VAS Team as work load dictates to meet patient needs.
· Has thorough knowledge of Policies & Procedures and follows Florida Hospital’s Policies & Procedures and CDC guidelines for sterile technique and isolation.
