General Summary:

The Oncology Research Nurse facilitates the implementation and activities of clinical trials for patients participating in pharmaceutical company, NCI Cooperative Group, In-house, and other network trials for Florida Hospital Cancer Institute physician investigators. Includes patient advocacy and education, education of other personnel, and marketing and promotion of the program. Ability to work independently, plans, coordinates, and helps oversee the process of the clinical trial. Follows study specific protocol guidelines, has excellent communication skills with investigators, hospital staff, sponsoring agencies and others to effectively perform clinical research and coordinate research activities.

· Demonstrates specialized knowledge of the unique needs of oncology patients undergoing treatment on cancer trials.

· Working knowledge of chemotherapy administration.

· Have personal qualities and interpersonal communication skills to interact and maintain good relationships with a broad spectrum of healthcare disciplines and the public under all circumstances.

· Detail oriented and teamwork skills required.

· Must be motivated, organized able to perform multiple tasks in a timely manner and work efficiently under pressure.

· Demonstrates the ability to manage multiple clinical trials and function independently.

· Critical thinker and possesses an analytical approach to problem solving.

· Able to perform diverse clinical and clerical duties.

· Possesses a working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications of Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, and Internet skills.

Education and Experience Required:

· Graduate of a school of nursing

· Minimum 6 years nursing experience with most recent 3 years in Oncology

· Current Chemo Certification

· BSN

· Prior Research experience

Licensure, Certification or Registration Required:

· Current valid nursing license in the State of Florida

· Certification in Oncology nursing for RNs, OCN for those responsible for adult patients or CPON for those responsible for pediatric patients

· Certificate from Clinical Research professional organization (i.e., SOCRA, ACRP).

Employee Clinic and collaborates to assure thorough follow-up.

· Accurately aggregates data and places in designated files on or before the 10th

business day of the month.

· Displays aggregated data in control chart format or run chart as applicable.

· Collaborate with appropriate departments/services, staff members, physicians when

appropriate

· Demonstrates knowledge of Continuous Process Improvement principles and participates in Process Improvement Teams as assigned or requested.

· Assists in the development of infection control related policies,

CVICU is a 28-bed post open heart intensive care unit. Our patients have had CABG, valve, Thoraco adominal, AAA or other type of vascular surgery. We are a recovery area and the patients are admitted to the unit, immediately post op. We make assignments according to patient acuity. We have 9 dedicated ORs and do an average of 2500 bypass cases per year. We have 16 surgeons and run off standing orders. We have Hewlett Packard Merlin Monitors with no central monitor, so nurses are responsible for staying at the bedside. We utilize Pleurovac and Emerson chest drainage systems and Gish cardiotomy reservoir for auto transfusion. Labs, x-rays, and ancillary services are ordered by computer. There is a satellite pharmacy and point of care lab open Monday through Friday 7a-11pm. Documentation is done on a tri-fold flow sheet with supplemental PIE charting. There is no mandatory OT in CVICU, but OT is available on an ongoing basis. We currently have full time, day shift openings on CVICU. Apply online and discover the possibilities at Florida Hospital. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Participates in daily rounds with Hospitalist Physicians including census reporting, discussion of treatment and aftercare plans, patient/family educational/instruction, and physician education for process improvement.

· Provides guidance to the Hospitalist Physician in determining appropriate level of care, utilization review criteria for admission,and continued stay, and discharge planning options. Utilizes critical thinking to review patients’clinical status using standardized clinical criteria per hospital policy.

· Ensures timely collection of statistical data, including audit requirements, payor source, quality performance indicators, and patient satisfaction for care received as expressed via the survey tools.

· Discusses discharge planning with physicians, nurses, case managers, other health care providers, and patients/families as needed. Incorporates age and developmental needs of the patient population into the discharge plan.

· Reviews the patient treatment plan for opportunities to facilitate efficient movement through the healthcare system and obtains clinical results and dictated reports to expedite care. Prioritizes work load to ensure assignments are completed.

· Communicates effectively utilizing all available internal and external methods, e.g., wireless, fax, voice mail, e-mail, etc. Documents pertinent data accurately in UR03, including clinical status summaries, and progress notes as indicated.

· Actively participates and cooperates with the Case Management Department in support of campus and system goals for capacity management and length of stay goals achievement. This includes, but is not limited to, identification of avoidable delays, initiation of treatment plans, identification of potential barriers to plans, attendance at Case Management Department meetings, educational presentations, and inservices.

· Maintains knowledge of federal and regulatory policies in the management of patient care.

· Attends professional meetings to participate in presenting findings to the Hospitalist Physicians, sharing feedback, and assisting with problem identification and resolution.

· Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure the smooth and successful operation of the department.

General Summary:

The Oncology Research Nurse facilitates the implementation and activities of clinical trials for patients participating in pharmaceutical company, NCI Cooperative Group, In-house, and other network trials for Florida Hospital Cancer Institute physician investigators. Includes patient advocacy and education, education of other personnel, and marketing and promotion of the program. Ability to work independently, plans, coordinates, and helps oversee the process of the clinical trial. Follows study specific protocol guidelines, has excellent communication skills with investigators, hospital staff, sponsoring agencies and others to effectively perform clinical research and coordinate research activities.

Knowledge and Skills:

· Demonstrates specialized knowledge of the unique needs of oncology patients undergoing treatment on cancer trials.

· Working knowledge of chemotherapy administration.

· Have personal qualities and interpersonal communication skills to interact and maintain good relationships with a broad spectrum of healthcare disciplines and the public under all circumstances.

· Detail oriented and teamwork skills required.

· Must be motivated, organized able to perform multiple tasks in a timely manner and work efficiently under pressure.

· Demonstrates the ability to manage multiple clinical trials and function independently.

· Critical thinker and possesses an analytical approach to problem solving.

· Able to perform diverse clinical and clerical duties.

· Possesses a working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications of Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, and Internet skills.

Education and Experience Required:

· Graduate of a school of nursing

· Minimum 6 years nursing experience with most recent 3 years in Oncology

· Current Chemo Certification

· BSN

· Prior Research experience

Licensure, Certification or Registration Required:

· Current valid nursing license in the State of Florida

· Certification in Oncology nursing for RNs, OCN for those responsible for adult patients or CPON for those responsible for pediatric patients

· Certificate from Clinical Research professional organization (i.e., SOCRA, ACRP).
